How to putt effectively

Hole 4The putting aspect of golf is extremely important because of the fact that each putt counts as one stroke just like your drive or your three-wood. Basically, each putt means something, and whenever you miss one, it’s just like you miss a drive normally.

What you should consider doing is learning how to putt better, as this aspect of golf should be developed and trained in order for long term success to be made. Your overall score depends on how you finish the hole, not so much on how you start it. So, to end the hole well, you should practice the tips below for good chances at having a lower score.

Reading the green

The reading of the green is extremely important, so you should learn how to read the green effectively. Try to go behind your ball to get a feel for the break of the green, and then don’t be afraid to go behind the hole to really see upclose how the break goes.

Aside from those two spots, don’t forget to look in the sides of your ball and the hole to see the difference in the break. Remember that your reading is the only thing that you do to read the break, so read it as best as you can.

Hitting the ball just right

Some people have the tendency to hit hard and sometimes not enough. It’s very difficult to practice the speeds of the green when you’re always competing and you just hit the ball right away without ever testing the green. So, simply trust your instinct when reading the green. If it’s going uphill, don’t be afraid to hit the ball just a tiny bit harder than usual.

For those downhill putts, make sure to hit softly and not so hard. Remember that it really does depend on the green on how hard you need to hit the golf ball, so going with your instinct is definitely the best thing to do.

Visualization

Visualizing is definitely the most important part of putting. If you don’t visualize that ball going in, then you can’t expect for that ball of yours to roll in. You need to make sure that in your mind you already made the putt, and that all you need to do is putt it in there.

Your mind can either help you or be against you, and if you use it against you, then you’re wasting such a powerful tool that can be extremely helpful for you when you’re playing. Your mind plays a huge part both on the green and on the fairway, so don’t forget to use the power of visualization throughout your game.

Golf is truly a game of confidence, and confidence can only be grown through practice, so don’t neglect practicing. Practice can probably be the best thing for you when it comes down to putting better, and if you implement the tips above, you are sure to see your putting get better.

It does take time, but you can succeed as long as you’re willing to practice both on and off the course.
