Tips for Learning to Play Golf

If you are just starting to play golf now is the time to learn properly before developing any bad habits. There are thousands of golfers who never started out learning the fundamentals and continue to struggle today because they did not build the proper foundation to hit the ball solidly. Unlike any other sport, golf is a learned behavior. The best athletes in the world who excel at most sports cannot just pick up a  club and hit a good golf shot. They still need to be shown how it is done.

Our tips for learning to play golf start with the stance. This is the way that you address the ball before you go to hit it. Your feet should be about shoulder length apart and your shoulders parallel to your target. The best way to determine if you are properly aligned is to lay a club down on the ground about 18 inches inside the line to your target. Now put the big toe of each foot up to the edge of the club.

The ball that you are about to strike should be just in front of the middle point between your feet. Positioning will depend on the club you are about to hit, keep the driver closer to your front foot and you’re pitching right at the midpoint.

Next, you have to form a proper grip to hold the club. It is very important that you hold the club in your fingers and not let it move up into the palm. You want to have a light grip to eliminate any tension in your hands or arms. If you are right handed, place the left hand on the club first and grab it like you would be shaking someone’s hand.

Now take the right hand and place it on top of the left with the little finger resting on top of the first and second finger of the left hand. Some people like to interlock the pinky with the index finger, do whatever you feel is most comfortable. You want your hands on the club so that the V formed by the thumb and first finger on both hands points toward your left shoulder.

Now, flex your knees, wiggle the club in your hands a little bit to relax and then place the club right behind the ball to prepare to swing. You want your hands, arms and shoulders all to move in unison.

As the hands go straight back, the arms follow and the shoulders start to turn to the rear. Raise the club to about shoulder height in the backswing and then start back down. The top of the grip should be pointing straight down at the ground as you start to turn your shoulders back to the front to bring the club head through.
